Introduction to Database Systems

This course is an introduction to the fundamental concepts of databases and database management systems (DBMS). Learners demonstrate vocabulary, component requirements, sorting and querying, and maintenance of simple databases using the fundamentals of database manipulation. Learners also apply Structured Query Language (SQL) and relational database management systems (RDBMS).

Introduction to Programming with Java

This course introduces learners to the programming discipline and prepares them to serve as Java programmers. Learners study and apply the fundamentals of the Java programming language such as data types, variables, expressions, statements, and methods. Learners also examine and practice the Java-object-oriented features of classes and objects. The course offers numerous opportunities for analyzing, designing, coding, testing, debugging, and evaluating Java programs in an authentic Java development environment.

Intermediate Java Programming

Learners apply features and techniques beyond the basics of the Java programming language to develop applications of moderate complexity. Learners analyze advanced object-oriented programming concepts like inheritance, polymorphism, interfaces, and abstract classes. Learners also investigate programming Graphical User Interface (GUI) applications with Java and the Java rich library of data structures like lists, stacks, and queues. Prerequisite(s): IT2249.

Information Security Concepts for the Information Technology Professional

Learners in this course demonstrate their knowledge of information security fundamentals. Learners apply their understanding of the concepts of confidentiality, integrity, and availability to securing organizational assets. Learners who have received credit for IT3350 may not take IT3358.

Project Management Principles

Learners build an understanding of the fundamental basics of project management and gain a broad overview of project management standards and their applicability to both business and IT projects. Learners analyze management theories, concepts, tools and techniques defined by the Project Management Institute (PMI®) including the Process Groups and Knowledge Areas. Learners also investigate other project management methodologies and frameworks, with an emphasis on Agile.

What you’ll learn
The General Information Technology specialization is designed to build your knowledge and skills in the fundamental IT domains of networking, database, web development, systems analysis and design, and project management. Students can also select more advanced IT courses that allow them to develop deeper and broader knowledge and skills in IT topics including web development, networking, project management, and graphics and multimedia.

What are the BS in IT admission requirements?
Applicants to the BS in Information Technology, General Information Technology program must provide the following information for admission:
- Admission application – no application fee required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- A transcript of any reported GED
- 4.5 credits eligible for transfer. See Sophia Admissions Pathways as an option to obtain credits.
- Applicants under the age of 24 must also submit a high school transcript verifying graduation
- A valid, government-issued form of photo identification
SAT and ACT are not required for admission.
FlexPath admission requirements
Applicants for our FlexPath self-paced learning option must also meet the following criteria:
- High school diploma or equivalent and 45 transferable college credits
- The recommended minimum GPA is 2.8 OR at least 100 applied transfer college credits. Those with a lower GPA and less than 100 applied transfer college credits may have the option to satisfy GPA and/or transfer credit requirements through successful completion of gen-ed courses through our affiliate Sophia prior to starting a Capella degree program.
Transition to FlexPath: Applicants whose GPA is below the FlexPath admission threshold may be considered once they successfully complete at least two GuidedPath courses (or eight credits, whichever is greater). Those learners will also need to meet the requirement of 45 transfer credits to be approved for the transition into FlexPath.
International student requirements
If you live outside the U.S. or aren’t a U.S. citizen, you may be considered an international student.
To meet the requirements for Capella admission, you must:
- Earn the minimum score on an acceptable test for proof of English proficiency
- Attend an internationally recognized institution
- Provide transcripts for evaluation
