Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society (Sigma) is a global nursing honor society whose mission is to advance nursing excellence through scholarship, leadership and service. To achieve that mission, Sigma provides numerous nursing professional development opportunities that focus on the core areas of education, leadership, career development, evidence-based nursing, research and scholarship.

Lisa Merritt, DNP, MSN, RN, president of the Omega Gamma chapter of Sigma at Capella, shares some of the ways Sigma membership can help benefit nursing students and alumni.

7 ways nursing students can benefit from Sigma membership

    1. Continuing professional development

Capella students and alumni who are Omega Gamma chapter members have access to continuing professional development opportunities. Sigma offers online continuing nursing education through peer-reviewed interactive learning activities that are presented in a variety of learning formats, including case studies, evidence-based articles, courses and webinars. Some resources are eligible for nursing continuing professional development (NCPD) credit hours.

    2. Access to advisors and mentors for career support

Capella Omega Gamma chapter members can take advantage of Sigma’s Mentoring Cohort. Developed by Sigma members, this resource allows members to connect and engage with experienced nursing leaders to help build and refine their skills in a structured virtual cohort environment – or join as a mentor to offer guidance to others.

    3. Job board access

Sigma’s job board allows members to create an account, upload a resume and set up alerts for the job type you’re interested in pursuing.

    4. Subscriptions to Sigma’s journals

Membership includes access to two peer-reviewed and evidence-based journals that share the latest research and trends in nursing: the Journal of Nursing Scholarship and Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing. 

With articles from leading nurse researchers on recommendations for clinical practice, nursing education, administration and public healthcare policy, these bimonthly journals can help keep Capella Omega Gamma chapter members up to date on advances in the nursing field. Select articles also offer NCPD contact hours. 

    5. Inter-professional collaboration

Sigma’s online community, The Circle, connects members worldwide. Capella Omega Gamma chapter members can discuss the industry with peers, ask questions of their fellow nurses, get opportunities to connect directly with their the Omega Gamma chapter and find volunteer opportunities.

    6. Event registration discounts

Sigma hosts a variety of education and research conferences, including a yearly congress that presents the latest nursing research from around the world, and a biennial convention that highlights best practices in clinical, scientific and leadership areas.

    7. Research funding and scholarship opportunities

Capella students who are Omega Gamma chapter members may be eligible for scholarship opportunities*. As Sigma members, there are also additional research grants and opportunities available for work that contributes to the nursing profession.

Becoming a member

The Omega Gamma chapter of Sigma within Capella provides additional opportunities for members to find community, collaborate and further their professional development with fellow Capella students and alumni.

Capella students who are interested in becoming Sigma members will be invited to join during the second month of the quarter after they qualify. Alumni are encouraged to explore the then reach out to [email protected] if they qualify. Once their eligibility is verified, they can be formally invited to become members. Both baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship are invited to apply.
